The Plane to Cape Town.

Cape Town airport.

Table Mountain dominates the city skyscape, even as one enters.
IMG_0026.JPG
At this point, I remember how much I missed the sea.
IMG_0028.JPG
My hotel room at the hip Fire and Ice.
IMG_0032.JPG
South Africa has old style vending machines.
IMG_0030.JPG
View of the city at night.
IMG_0479.JPG
Same view, the next morning.
IMG_0484.JPG
The Company's Garden in downtown.
IMG_0488.JPG
It's a lovely central park.
IMG_0503.JPG
Sunday was Women's Day and there was someone filming a celebration.
IMG_0487.JPG
De Tuynhuys, the office of the President.
IMG_0489.JPG
The Parliament building.
IMG_0518.JPG
St. George's, the Anglican church.
IMG_0492.JPG
Cape Town city hall.
IMG_0494.JPG
Entering the Castle, the original military fortress.
IMG_0496.JPG
Some quarters inside the Castle.
IMG_0499.JPG
Before digital watches, time was still necessary. It was actually about 12:30 when I took this; current time is one hour later, because South Africa uses just one time zone.
IMG_0498.JPG
Dolphin pool at the Castle, though there never were dolphins there. I think.
IMG_0505.JPG
The South African museum, mostly animal history.
IMG_0509.JPG
Perhaps the coolest part are life size skeletons of whales and other sea creatures. They even describe the coelacanth.
IMG_0510.JPG
A temporary exhibit was about disease.
IMG_0512.JPG
St. Mary's, the Catholic Cathedral, is fairly new, compared to the Anglican building.
IMG_0515.JPG
The church inside is not that large. Note the crown of thorns above the altar.
IMG_0524.JPG
Table Mountain looks different on a foggy day.
IMG_0528.JPG
The District Six Museum talks about a forced dislocation of Africans.
IMG_0529.JPG
Apartheid was a nasty deal.
IMG_0534.JPG
There's an outdoor market outside the train station, in case you need purses, belts, shoes, or Simba chips.
IMG_0536.JPG
All cities have ugly public art.
IMG_0581.JPG
The Metro train. I bought a tourist ticket to Simons town.
IMG_0540.JPG
On the way to Simons town, I feel drawn like Legolas.
IMG_0542.JPG
Simons town is gorgeous, built into the hills.
IMG_0543.JPG
It's also a home for the South African Navy.
IMG_0544.JPG
There's a naval military museum; the weaponry in the basement is most interesting.
IMG_0546.JPG
This one is for my parents.
IMG_0548.JPG
After walking around, I examined real estate prices. Compared to California, it's a deal. Apparently Brits have bought a lot.
IMG_0559.JPG
Boulders Beach, as you can see.
IMG_0562.JPG
I miss the ocean.
IMG_0563.JPG
It's 30 rand to go on the beach, and well worth it. Seriously, it's like four US dollars.
IMG_0561.JPG
My hand is in the Atlantic Ocean here.
IMG_0560.JPG
Oh yeah ... one more thing ....
IMG_0576.JPG
For unknown reasons, a colony of penguins moved here in the early 1980s.
IMG_0550.JPG
The government built them little houses.
IMG_0558.JPG
In South Africa, there are few of the annoying safety rules, so you can get pretty close. There's just a little fence here.
IMG_0568.JPG
I'm about ten feet away in this picture. I could try to catch one, but they bite.
IMG_0564.JPG
You can swim with the penguins, though the water was too cold in South African winter. Sigh.
IMG_0574.JPG
Ha! I see you!
IMG_0565.JPG
Good night, Simons Town. This moved very high on the list of places I'd like to live.
